The Irish Innovation Panel

Here we provide an overview of the development and use of the Irish Innovation Panel dataset. An initial Data Overview is followed by links to the key Survey Reports. A listing of publications and projects based on the Irish Innovation Panel is also included.

Data Overview

To date the Irish Innovation Panel (IIP) comprises five linked surveys each covering firms’ innovation activities over a three-year period. These have been designed to provide sector-by-sector results and to reflect the innovation activities of smaller firms in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Details of the IIP surveys are given in the Table below.

A key feature of the IIP has been a high overall response rate and a consistent attempt to build a longitudinal dataset which allows long-term analysis of firms’ innovation activity. This latter property has meant that the IIP has begun to attract increasing interest from the research community with benefits for our understanding of innovation behaviour in Ireland and Northern Ireland. We are keen to encourage use of the data and welcome interest in developing collaborative research agendas.

The IIP has been used in a number of official and research contexts:

(a) Invest NI have used the IIP data as part of their performance monitoring data to reflect the impact of innovation support measures.

(b) The Economic Development Forum have used IIP data as part of their long-term target setting for the Northern Ireland economy.

(c) IIP data formed a key input to the Northern Ireland regional innovation strategy proposals formulated in Cooke et al (2002).

(d) Other agencies have taken advantage of benchmarks developed from the IIP to contribute to the development of regional benchmarks including SEEDA, the Scottish Executive and more locally as part of a regional assessment of innovation capability in Co Tyrone.
